I was delighted to see this report on this past weekend’s Heroes Con, over on Bleeding Cool, where Jim Steranko made a rare public appearance.
There, he shared the story behind the legendary cover to The Incredible Hulk Special #1, an image that has been paid many an homage over the years, from the Bruce Jones run to the recent anniversary issue of Todd McFarland’s Spawn.
To paraphrase the story, which sadly includes no direct quotes, Marvel had almost forgotten to have a cover done for the issue, so Steranko worked overnight, with no editorial input as to the cover’s content, to hand it in the following day at 8 am.
On the way into the office, he tried to give himself a quick shave in the car, but cut himself badly when another car bumped his, and handed the art in while bleeding.
Wow- this image was concocted in under 24 hours, and it was all from the mind of Staranko. This is why he is a legend, folks.
